Student Activity-The student will understand the note about Friendship and complete the following activity.
Assigned- Friday April 27th, 2012
Due Wed May 2nd, 2012
5.12 Homework Task: How Intimate am I?
By the time you finish this homework assignment you will . . .
· investigate the intimacy levels of your relationships
· identify the intimacy levels of your relationships
· evaluate how similar and different your intimacy levels are between relationships of different kinds
· plan any changes you would like to make in the intimacy level you have with these relationships
STEP One: Choose THREE people who you are in a relationship with at this time.
Investigate your level of intimacy with each person by making written records of how you communicate with each of these people. For example, did you share an emotion with one of your parents today? Maintain these records for at least two days. You should have at least three written records for each relationship.
NB: You may choose your relationship with God as one of your three relationships.
STEP Two: After you have read over your written records, read over the Relationship Intimacy Scale levels. Identify which level each of your five relationships is in at this point in time. For example, you could say that you have a level four relationship with your brother because you told him how upset you were with a test score. And yet, you didn’t feel that you could tell him how you have always been jealous of how well he does in school. Be sure to explain your answers.
STEP Three: This is the most important part of the assignment. Write a half page indicating any surprises you found about the levels of your relationships. For example, if you found that you are actually more intimate with your parent than your best friend, would that surprise you? Lastly, which of your five relationships would you like to change to a different level of intimacy? Explain why.
Assessment: You will be assessed for your understanding and application of the Intimacy Scale. You will receive a learning skill indicator for “works habits” when this assignment is due in two days time.

5.12 Am I in a Relationship? (Knowledge/Understanding)
Instructions: Student will read note.
Evaluation: Quiz May 2012
· A relationship is a connection between persons.
· We have many different kinds of relationships.
A relationship can be personal, impersonal, close, or distant.
· At birth we experience our first relationship - mother-child, and as our lives move on we create an entire web of relationships.
· Relationships are essential for human survival and development.
Communities are even based on relationships.
· A beautiful union exists between three relationships: with God; with self; with others.
Each of these relationships has a direct impact on the others.
· It is clear that God created us to live in relationship to others. As Christians we are called on to develop loving, intimate, committed relationships. We experience God through relationships.
“Then the Lord said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone;
I will make him a helper as his partner.’” (Genesis 2:18)
“Beloved, let us love one another because love is from God;
everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.” (1 John 4: 7)
Jesus said: “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)
“This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.”
(John 15:12)
· Intimate means very close, familiar and personal. Relationships are intimate when they are trusting, open and committed - which are also three qualities of LOVE.
· In conclusion, relationships that are intimate are also loving. God calls us to be in loving, intimate relationships.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
· At this time, it should be noted that loving relationships can be formed with friends and family members. However, a marriage relationship is intimate in a very unique way. We will discuss this distinction in Unit 3.8 - Male and Female: God Created Us.

Read the following passage and Agree or Disagree with its message. How can individualism lead to Happiness in the Western world or at Don Bosco? Discuss.
Individualism Rejected
Non-Western culture rejects individualism. It holds that all achievement is ultimately a gift from God or/and a product of the group—not a result of the individual and his or her reason, volition and initiative.
In other words, nonwestern culture may hold that God controls, and is responsible for, everything—including the individual and whatever he or she may achieve.

Western culture holds that the attainment of one's own worldly happiness should be the focus of each person's life.
Put differently, Western culture holds that worldly happiness is, in the words of Aristotle, “the best, noblest, and most pleasant thing... the meaning and the purpose of life, the whole aim and end of human existence.”[1]
Happiness is a fundamental and lasting sense of joy and serenity that results from achieving personally meaningful and rational values. Happiness is an indication that one is living successfully, a life proper to a human being, while suffering (as a way of life) is a sign that one is not.[2]

Liars, cheaters, thieves, murderers and the like must be intensely concerned with getting caught, spending time in jail and/or, perhaps more seriously, forever labeled untrustworthy and cast out as pariahs—losing at least some of the benefits of living in society as a result. And for many such individuals, a simple knock at the door, bump in the night or countless other normally non-threatening occurrences become terror since they may represent the police or, perhaps worse, their victims seeking revenge.
