5.12  Am I in a Relationship? (Knowledge/Understanding)
Instructions: Student will read note.
Evaluation: Quiz May 2012

·                    A relationship is a connection between persons.

·                    We have many different kinds of relationships.
A relationship can be personal, impersonal, close, or distant.

·                    At birth we experience our first relationship - mother-child, and as our lives move on we create an entire web of relationships.

·                    Relationships are essential for human survival and development.
Communities are even based on relationships.

·                    A beautiful union exists between three relationships: with God; with self; with others.
Each of these relationships has a direct impact on the others.

·                    It is clear that God created us to live in relationship to others.  As Christians we are called on to develop loving, intimate, committed relationships.  We experience God through relationships.

“Then the Lord said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone;
  I will make him a helper as his partner.’”              (Genesis 2:18)

“Beloved, let us love one another because love is from God;
  everyone who loves is born of God and knows God.”     (1 John 4: 7)

  Jesus said:   “You must love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:39)
“This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you.”
(John 15:12)

·                    Intimate means very close, familiar and personal.  Relationships are intimate when they are trusting, open and committed - which are also three qualities of LOVE.

·                    In conclusion, relationships that are intimate are also loving.  God calls us to be in loving, intimate relationships.

·                    At this time, it should be noted that loving relationships can be formed with friends and family members.  However, a marriage relationship is intimate in a very unique way. We will discuss this distinction in Unit 3.8 - Male and Female: God Created Us.
